The sentence follows a two-week trial culminating in the conviction by an Atlantic County jury of Jamel Carlton, of Saugerties, NY, on March 31, 2022.
In addition to sexual assault, Carlton was convicted on burglary and criminal restraint charges.
The sentence imposed calls for an aggregate extended term of 42 years in New Jersey State Prison with the defendant having to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act. Additionally,
Carlton will be subject to Megan’s Law, Parole Supervision for Life, and to have no contact with the victim pursuant to a sex offender restraining order.
Both the victim and her family were present at the sentencing. The victim told the Court and the defendant how much pain his actions have caused her and her family. She asked the Court to impose a lengthy sentence.
“The strength of the victim in this case was extraordinary," said Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer who tried the case with co-counsel Chief Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko.
The case was investigated by the Atlantic City Police Department with the assistance of Bally’s security and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
